Message from the LOC

It is with great pleasure that the Université du Québec à Montréal and the Faculty of Communication are hosting the conference of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) from July 12th to 16th 2015. For this event, close to 1500 participants from 80 countries will attend.  The IAMCR is one of the oldest associations concerned with the promotion and research in communication around the world.  Since 1957, the conference, comprised of around thirty sections and working groups having three official languages (English, French, and Spanish), has been organized every year.

Hegemony or Resistance? On the Ambiguous Power of Communication has been adopted as the theme for the Montreal conference.  This theme reflects both the history and particular culture of our university and our city while also echoing recent world events.  The theme refers to the central role of communication in different resistance movements (Occupy, Idle No More, Arab Spring, Maple Spring, etc.) which have been organized in recent years to denounce an economic, political, and cultural system with hegemonistic objectives put in place by governments or corporations in order to serve their self-interests, which sometimes have detrimental effects on local populations and cultures.

In addition to reknowned speakers, panels and parallel sessions will be offered within the conference schedule. The organizing committee has also planned for several social and cultural activities that will allow all the participants to renew links and as well as make new ones with colleagues coming from the four corners of the world.  These activities will help bring people together in a more festive atmosphere.  The organizing committee would like to showcase the talents and creativity of the students attending our university.  We recognize their hard work and thank them for their help that has contributed to the success of this event.

It would be impossible to offer a conference of this scope without having adequate resources. As such the organizing committee would like to thank all the institutions, public and private, that have accepted to support, either by financing or through other means, the organization of this conference.

The members of the organizing committtee of IAMCR UQAM 2015 sincerely believe that the City of Montreal, the Province of Quebec, and Canada are places where living is vibrant and productive.  Therefore, we are very proud to welcome you among us.  Hoping that this conference will be a unique and memorable event for you, we would like to express our gratitude to you for honouring us with your presence.

Cordially,

Christian Agbobli and Yanick Farmer,
co-directors of the local organising committee
